Hypodermic injections of mood-altering drugs were first used, for therapeutic reasons, by physicians. Some employed them, along with adrenalin and other natural stimulants, in everyday practice. A patient suddenly stimulated, without knowing the nature of the drug received, was likely to connect it to "a shot in the arm"
