Origin
The rose is the primary symbol for love and beauty, but it is also the image of luxury and perfection. The related metaphor has been in use since the 16th century. In 1593, Christopher Marlowe combines the ideas of luxury and love in his poem The passionate shepherd to his love, which opens with the celebrated line "Come live with me and be my love" and continues two stanzas later with:
And I will make thee beds of roses
And a thousand fragrant posies;
A cap of flowers, and a kirtle
Embroider'd all with leaves of myrtle.
