Chiaramente con la testa nelle nuvole ci si trova molto lontani dalla realtà della vita quotidiana sulla terra.
L'espressione però può avere anche un riferimento alla commedia Le nuvole (423 a.C.) di Aristofane, in cui Socrate è rappresentato come un pensatore dedito a discorsi e a ragionamenti inutili: siede a mezz'aria in una cesta per "liberare il pensiero" o discute di cose futili, come la lunghezza del salto di una pulce.
