Edmond Hoyle was an expert on card games, especially on whist, a forerunner of contract bridge. In 1742 he published "A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist", which for more than a century was used to settle disputes about the rules. Later on, his name was used in the title of a reference book containing rules for many card games and ever since "according to Hoyle" has meant according to the rules of the game
